About Me
My name is Avanji Vaze. I am a first generation immigrant from Mumbai, India living in Boston. I am an artist, educator and an advocate who specializes in comics, prints, paintings, drawings and zines. I believe in facing the world around us with compassion, pride and empathy, and I bring that approach to my work as an artist as well as an educator.
In my artwork I explore the systems of the world that shape us into who we are, or rather who I am. The subjects I consider are my heritage, the ways marginalized members of society build community through tradition, different kinds of love, and trust as the fabric of society. The mediums I work with range from painting, digital drawing and relief printing with linoleum. These mediums shape my stories into how they want to be told.
I work from memory, history and stories that I find or are told to me and I explore malleability, adaptation and liberation with a focus on mark making. My goal as an artist is to empower the viewer to claim their place in their world.
In addition to my artwork I also teach AP 2D Art and Visual Arts at the high school level, along with comics and figure drawing workshops for a wide range of ages. I got my MFA in Visual Narrative from Boston University in 2024 and have been working as an independent artist and art educator since then.
I look for the sun everywhere and I love the beach.
